Yoga for COVID-19 Management and Public Health

Ramkumar Rathi Patanjali Yoga Chair and AYUSH CoE with Health Centre, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Pune conducted a webinar on 'Yoga for prophylaxis, post-COVID-19 management, and public health'. The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged the healthcare systems globally. Worldwide, researchers are struggling to find a solution to this unprecedented crisis. Yoga practices have a positive effect on strengthening immune systems. Thus, its potential as effective, safer, accessible, and affordable prophylaxis of COVID-19 cannot be denied. To acknowledge the potential role of Yoga in the prophylaxis of COVID-19, this webinar was conducted on the occasion of International Yoga Day 2021.

Prof. Bhushan Patwardhan gave a speech on the importance of Yoga and Ayurveda during the start of this webinar. This was followed by a presentation by Dr Ishwar Basavaraddi, giving insightful information regarding Yoga postures and its effects during his online presentation ‘Yoga for prophylaxis and post-COVID-19 management’. Dr Rakesh Sarwal offered his thoughts on ‘Yoga for Public Health’


Reporting COVID-19 Clinical Practice Outcomes

The case report is an important aspect in Ayurveda since it follows a personalised therapeutic approach. Hence, the webinar focused on training the audience to design and write well planned case reports to validate the interventions for Ayurvedic treatments. Eminent experts offered insightful information regarding the importance of publishing case reports during this webinar.

Topics like, the value of case reports, positioning clinical practice outcomes, quality aspects of case reports, using care statement to write case reports, formats for reporting COVID-19 practice outcomes, avenues for publishing case reports, case reports and its scope and limitations were discussed by experts.

The attendees received comprehensive knowledge about - how to write a manuscript for a case report (considering the importance of each diagnosed COVID-19 case), the rationale of complete treatment, novelty in the study, looking for the right journal, checking its impact factor, understanding the journal before publishing.


Charaka Samhita in Present Context

(12th April 2021)

Charaka Samhita explains the foundations of Ayurveda. It has been a guiding text for many centuries. The Ayurveda principles explained by Maharishi Charak provided guidance for addressing health challenges of the modern era. Considering this aspect of Charaka Samhita, a commentary 'Yashawant Tika' authored by senior clinician Vaidya Y. G. Joshi was published at the hands of Prof Bhushan Patwardhan, National Research Professor-AYUSH. Vaidya Y. G. Joshi shared his detailed insights of Charaka Samhita through online interaction.


COVID-19 Pandemic: Evolving Science and Systems

(7th April 2021)

The COVID-19 pandemic was unfortunate but was an opportunity for science and medicine systems to evolve. The webinar was organised to understand the scientific status of COVID-19 pandemic in terms of viral mutations and therapeutic approaches evolved during COVID-19 pandemic.

The theme of 1st session was science of the virus and the pandemic. Dr. Yogesh Shouche, Scientist, NCCS and Prof. Milind Watve, Scientist, IISER discussed the latest understanding about the mutations and virus variants and elaborated on the mortality trends. The basic details of SARS-CoV-2 virus structure, nomenclature, its mutants as well as past studies were discussed during this session.

The 2nd session was about health systems in pandemic. Dr. Anita Kar, Founder Director, Birth Defects and Childhood Disability Research Centre and Dr. Subhash Salunke, Associate Professor, University of Texas discussed the public health systems’ preparedness and response.


Observational Studies in Yoga

(27th March 2021)

The webinar was conducted for spreading awareness about the importance of documentation in Yoga practices for alumni of certificate courses in Yoga and other Yoga teachers. Dr Praseeda Menon, Research Officer, Kaivalyadhama Yoga Institute and Dr Shashikant Dudhgaonkar, In-charge, Health Centre, Savitribai Phule Pune University orientated students about the effect of Yoga on quality of life followed by explaining observational studies.


6. Documentation in Yoga Practice

(19th December 2020)

This webinar was organised by Ramkumar Rathi Patanjali Yoga Chair along with Health Centre, SPPU and Kaivalyadham Yoga Institute, Lonavala. The webinar was intended for Yoga teachers/instructors and students to demonstrate techniques involved in measuring effects of Yoga practices and discussed the importance of documentation in Yoga teaching and practice.

Dr Girish Tillu, Principal Investigator, AYUSH Center of Excellence, Department of Health Sciences, Savitribai Phule Pune University discussed the importance of documentation in research and imbibing the observational skills and methods in recording progress, and providing records of effective protocols and methods. The webinar assisted the yoga instructors to develop and follow a structured method of giving yoga protocol and also provided a feedback of progress to the practitioners.


7. Webinar Series on Yoga for Youth

(22nd - 24th June 2020)

To commemorate the International Yoga Day 2020 and to address the surge in Yoga practice, the Ramkumar Rathi Patanjali Yoga Chair, Board of Sports and Physical Education and Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, Department of Health Sciences of Savitribai Phule Pune University organized this webinar series. The series aimed at introducing various dimensions of Yoga especially for the students who are aspiring for academic excellence and future career.
